April 21 - Piper Mlsna- Mercury Thermostats: Taking Advantage of Product Stewardship Groups

Summary:

Hear from Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC), a national product stewardship group in charge of recycling waste mercury thermostats. Find out why it is smart to take advantage of free programs like TRC and other free or relatively inexpensive specialized product stewardship groups in order to save costs, gain access to outreach and education networks, gather data, and increase convenience.

Short Bio:

Piper Mlsna is the Outreach Specialist for the Thermostat Recycling Corporation (TRC), a manufacturer-funded non-profit stewardship organization that facilitates and manages the collection and proper disposal of mercury-containing thermostats. TRC’s goal is simple: keep mercury out of the waste stream in order to protect the environment. TRC thermostat collection bins have historically been distributed to HVAC wholesale distributors and HVAC contractors. In 2006 the program expanded to include household hazardous waste collection sites and thermostat retailers. Today more than 3,600 businesses and communities in 48 states are enrolled in the program. Since the beginning over 2.1 million mercury-containing thermostats have been collected, which is about 10 tons of mercury.
